WHAT DOES TY STAND FOR?
PRESERVE OUR HISTORY
Our history is the key to our identity. Preserving our historic buildings maintains our neighborhoods' character and pride. We should take a multi-faceted approach to historic preservation, expanding historic districts where appropriate, and encouraging the adaptive re-use of historic buildings with a focus on affordable housing. A central part of our history has always been about welcoming new people from all over the world. Rehabilitating historic buildings as affordable and market-rate housing should be a primary objective.
FIGHT FOR AFFORDABility
Salem’s energy is derived from a diverse mix of age, income and backgrounds. We must encourage new housing at all levels to help stabilize the market and keep Salem affordable and accessible for everyone. We need to use all tools available to us to create more housing stock including, adaptive reuse of historic structures, inclusionary zoning initiatives, affordability incentives and the loosening of restrictions on homeowners.
The first job of those serving on our city council is to be a connection between Salem’s city government and Salem’s citizens. Councillors should be accessible by every method that Salemites communicate. They should be expected to communicate professionally and plainly with constituents, to have thick skin, and remain empathetic toward those who disagree with them.
